Is it unlawful to sink structure in local lakes in Virginia?
Q. I was thinking of sinking a few brush piles (maybe 3 or 4) in some different lakes to give myself and a friend a few spots as I know many fisherman do. I was just wondering if it is against the law to do so or not? I've heard so many different answers but I want to get an answer from some one who can either give me a reference or a difinitive answer from a fellow citizen in Virginia. Thanks!

A. I'm afraid I couldn't find a definitive answer. The best thing I can tell you is that it is unlawful in some lakes and possibly not in others. Check your local ordinances and regulations for the lake and community where you plan to sink structure. Some structure is necessary, and usually improves fishing, but too much can "choke" a body of water by creating too much plant life in the water, so it is regulated in places. The link below should help.

How Many Years Until The Great Lakes Disappear?
Q. We all know that the Great Lakes are relatively young (12,000 years old or so) "puddles" left over from the glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age. Like all puddles, the lakes will dry up / drain completely at some point in the future. I have heard anything from 50,000 to 1 million more years. Does anyone have a fairly accurate estimate of when this might occur? Just curious.
Asked by Beetso - Thu Feb 7 12:43:21 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Isostatic rebound is occurring at about 1 cm per year in Scandinavia. Assuming an equal rebound in the Great Lakes region, and a depth of about 400 meters, is should take about 40,000 years. I would go with the 50,000 year estimate.

Can I use Land O Lakes Spreadable Butter to make chocolate chip cookies?
Q. The recipe calls for two sticks of butter. I only have one stick in the fridge, but I also have one of those tubs of Land O Lakes spreadable butter. Since it is actually butter, and not margarine, I am told it would taste fine. Has anyone used this land o lakes spreadable butter before, or know if it would be OK to use?
Asked by Ashley - Sun Dec 26 18:56:00 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. not a good idea. The reason that butter is so spreadable is there is water whipped into it. That will break down and effect the end result of your cookies. Make up the difference with either oil or Crisco shortening.

What are the most populated, high-scale lakes in California?
Q. My family just got a boat and we want to leave it in California for when we vacation there, but we don't know where to put it. We want a well-known, large, populated lake with a bunch of other boaters, jetskiiers, etc. Are there any lakes in California that would fit that description. Also it would be great if it was no longer than 5-6 hours away from the Los Angeles suburbs area. Thanks for your help!

What causes oceans and lakes to change colors?
Q. What causes oceans to become green? what causes them to be very blue but sometimes very gray? What causes lakes to become blue to very brown?
Asked by Out of the Blue - Sat Jul 26 16:38:14 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. alot of it has to do with the bacteria and molecules in the water. for example have you seen a mountain lake that is fed by a fresh water spring. Well the water is very clear and so it easliy reflects the sky. It's because the water is pure since it has not been stationary. Buut lets say in a swamp the water sits still allowing bacteria to have time to grow. So oceans are ver yblue when they are cleaner. Thats why the location of the ocean reflects the color. In the carribean the water is relativley clean so it is very clear and blue. It all depends on the sediments and bacteria in the water.

A. the oceans are the largest share. something like 97-98% of all the water is in the oceans. and it all arrived in comets. the early earth was too hot to retain much water. any that was present as the earth was forming was boiled away. after the earth had cooled for millions of years, then the water in arriving comets stopped boiling away.

Suggestions for good Southern Bass fishing lakes in the Spring?
Q. From Northern Illinois, we usually go to Arkansas but are going to change it up this spring. We mostly fish for Largemouth Bass and Stripers. Usually go in April or the first week of May at the latest. Kinda want to keep it within 15 hours or so drive time. I've looked into several lakes such as Lake Fork, Tx. Barkley/Kentucky, Ky. Any suggestions would be great.

A. You need to check out Lake Guntersville in Alabama. It's got a lot of huge largemouth in it. Look at the weights from when the pros fished it. For more information you can call Waterfront bait and tackle at 1-256-582-6060. When I've been down there to fish tournaments they marked spots on my map and gave me tips on what the fish were hitting. It looks like a mini Bass Pro Shop in there. They also have a guide service and rent cabins. Cabins are also available at Guntersville state park. There are several boat ramps on the lake so usually no waiting to get in or out. The lake has lots of spotted bass too and giant crappie. I'm not sure about stripers but you can check the web for that. I've been there twice and it's on my list of lakes to… [cont.]

How do I get to the lakes of Killarney?
Q. My dad has always wanted to go there and as its his 60th birthday this month, me and my brothers wanna treat him. He lives near southampton. Whats the best way to get there? Can you fly from Southampton straight to the lakes?
Asked by glkelly80 - Mon Jun 4 15:36:34 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am afraid that it seems the only flights from Southampton to Kerry County Airport are ones with Air France that go Charles De Gaulles in Paris, then to Dublin and then to Kerry County and cost a small fortune. However I think there is an Irish airline that flies from Southampton to Cork International and from there you could either get a connecting flight or you could hire a car and drive for an hour or two to get to Killarney. For a really magical stay don't stay in the middle of Killarney stay at the Park Hotel in Kenmare which is right on the ring of Kerry high up on the Killarney mountains. It is beautiful.

What Type of Seasonal Attractions Are There Around and In The Great Lakes?
Q. I'm probably going to be moving up north to The Great Lakes - most likely close to Lake Michigan. What type of seasonal attractions are there? I've heard that for the most part, you can't swim in The Lakes; is that true? What kinds of things can people do up there?

A. The obvious attraction to the Great Lakes is the amazing sailing and boating destinations. If you don't spend a lot of time on a boat, there are still plenty of exciting events and attractions surrounding the Great Lakes especially during the summer months. The Lake Michigan coast is one of the world's most beautiful shorelines, encompassing some of the top beaches on the Great Lakes. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure with sand dunes to climb, big cities to visit, pristine waters to sail, swim and explore, postcard-perfect sunsets to enjoy and fabulous fishing. Without a doubt, all of the Great Lakes are swim-able. In your case - Lake Michigan - may not be warm enough until August, but that all depends on where… [cont.]

A lake is a body of relatively still fresh or salt water of considerable size, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land. Lakes are inland and not part of the ocean and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are larger and deeper than ponds. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
